Christmas Plant Competition

The competition was to count the number of plants in flower on Christmas Day. The idea came from Richard Barnes during his December Zoom talk on The Winter Garden.

30 people took part, with an average of 18.8 plants in flower in each garden. Put another way, we counted 565 flowering plants, in mid-December. More astonishingly, they came from 125 distinct genera.

The top five, in terms of the number within each genus counted are: Helleborus, Rosa, Cyclamen, Erigeron karvinskianus (Mexican Fleabane) and Penstemon.

Congratulations to our winners
